Texas school administrators are heading to Austin this week to tell lawmakers about the impact of last year's school funding overhaul.

The Texas House Committee on Public Education is reviewing the rollout of House Bill 2, the $8.5 billion school funding package passed in 2025. Superintendents and principals from across the state are expected to describe school closures, teacher layoffs, and holes in special education services.

Districts say the law's complicated funding formulas left many of them worse off, especially smaller and rural schools. Teacher recruitment and retention have reportedly taken a hit as budgets tightened.

The hearings are part of a broader end-of-session review as the legislature wraps up its regular 2026 business.

Article Icon 1Preparing for Hurricane Season

The Atlantic hurricane season officially opened yesterday, with the potential to impact 367 miles of Texas Gulf coastline.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is forecasting below-normal activity for the season, with 8 to 14 named storms and 1 to 3 major hurricanes, well below historical averages. The Colorado State University's hurricane group agrees, citing El Niรฑo-driven wind shear that tends to weaken storms before they can intensify over the tropical Atlantic.

However, a quiet basin-wide forecast does not project where storms will go. NOAA has been clear that landfall location can't be predicted months out, and one direct hit can make any season catastrophic for the community in its path.

Experts have urged Southeast Texans to use this early window to review evacuation zones, stock a hurricane kit, and check flood insurance coverage.
