Three people were killed Saturday afternoon when a single-engine plane crashed in a field about a mile from Geauga County Airport in Middlefield.

The Piper Comanche 250 had flown from Geauga to Youngstown for what appeared to be a day trip and was returning to land when it crashed. Firefighters who responded to the scene found all three occupants dead, and investigators said the aircraft sustained major damage.

Authorities identified the victims as Thomas Cunningham, 76, of Rome, John Taipale, 71, of Geneva, and Alexander Taipale, 40, of Geneva.

The Chardon Post of the State Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have also been notified.

Article Icon 1Vance Opens Iran Talks in Switzerland

Ohio-born Vice President JD Vance arrived in Switzerland on Sunday to open negotiations with Iran aimed at turning last week’s interim ceasefire into a lasting agreement.

Vance and Iranian officials began a 60-day push to resolve the technical details of limiting Tehran’s nuclear program and keeping the Strait of Hormuz open.

Renewed fighting in Lebanon between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group has tested the agreement in the days since it was signed. President Trump warned that the U.S. would resume strikes if Iran fails to rein in its proxies.

Vance said he planned to stay for a day or two before leaving the detailed negotiations to his team.

A former Columbus Crew goalkeeper made a record 15 saves Saturday night, the most ever in a 90-minute World Cup match.

Eloy Room, who played for the Crew from 2019 to 2023, led Curaçao to a scoreless draw against heavily favored Ecuador in Kansas City. His performance came one save short of the all-time tournament record of 16, set by American goalkeeper Tim Howard in a 2014 match that included extra time.

Curaçao is the smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup, with a population smaller than Akron’s.

Room won an MLS Cup and MLS Save of the Year honors during his time in Columbus. You can watch his World Cup highlights here.
