Nearly two-thirds of school property and income tax increases failed in last week’s elections, roughly half the rate from a year earlier.

The broad rejection came as taxpayers and lawmakers continue pushing to abolish property taxes in Ohio. Voters approved 12 of 50 new school levies and 12 of 16 renewal measures.

According to the Buckeye Association of School Administrators, “new money levies” usually fail seven out of 10 times—a rate the group says has remained steady for the past 25 years—while renewal levies pass about 80% of the time.

Article Icon 1Doctors: Hantavirus Poses Little Risk

As international health officials monitor a hantavirus outbreak, Ohio medical experts say the virus poses little risk of reaching the Buckeye State.

“I think the one thing everyone is asking is: Is this going to spread like COVID? It’s not,” Cleveland Clinic infectious disease physician Dr. Donald Dumford said.

Dumford said that unless a person was aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship or exposed to a passenger, he would explore “about 90 other things” before hantavirus if the person developed flu-like symptoms.

The cruise ship hit by the virus arrived off the Spanish island of Tenerife on Sunday, and passengers began leaving to fly home. So far, three passengers have died, and at least eight suspected cases have been reported.

Columbus placed near the top of the list of the nation’s strongest major metro areas for recent college graduates, according to payroll services provider ADP.

The Buckeye State capital ranked fourth among major U.S. metro areas, landing in the 94th percentile as hiring rates rose from 2.4% to 3.1% over the past year. Columbus trailed Birmingham, Alabama; Tampa, Florida; and San Jose, California.

The Cincinnati metro area landed in the 19th percentile, with an annual wage of about $49,000 and a hiring rate of 2.1%.

Cleveland was excluded from the study because of a small sample size.
