Justice: Keep Partisan Politics Away

Georgia Supreme Court Justice Sarah Hawkins Warren said her re-election showed voters want partisan politics kept out of judicial races.

“The Supreme Court of Georgia is a nonpartisan court by constitutional design, and I am thankful that it will stay that way,” Warren said in her victory statement.

Warren and Justice Charlie Bethel won re-election, fending off Democrat-backed challenges from former state Sen. Jen Jordan and attorney Miracle Rankin, respectively. A third incumbent justice, Ben Land, was unopposed.

The contested races drew national political attention and, ahead of the election, a state judicial oversight panel also ruled that Jordan and Rankin likely violated judicial ethics rules by publicly endorsing each other, which is prohibited for judicial candidates in Georgia.

Bottoms Claims Dem Crown

Keisha Lance Bottoms said her winning the Democratic governor nomination answered those who questioned her political chops after serving as a one-term Atlanta mayor.

“With everything that we have faced, people rightfully ask, can it be done, and can we win? We know the answer is absolutely yes," Bottoms said of her outright win.

Bottoms will face the winner of the June 16 GOP runoff between Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and businessman Rick Jackson. Jones led Jackson in Tuesday's voting, 38% to 33%.

Other runoffs will include the race between GOP U.S. Senate challengers U.S. Rep. Mike Collins and Derek Dooley. Collins topped Dooley 40% to 30% on Tuesday.

NAIA Softball World Series Opens

The NAIA Softball World Series begins today at the South Commons Complex in Columbus, drawing 10 teams for a week of championship play.

The qualifiers include small colleges from Michigan, Florida, Kentucky, Idaho, Oregon, Indiana, Texas, and British Columbia.

Games run daily at the same complex that hosted softball games during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 2019 USA Softball International Cup.

The city's annual hosting of the event brings significant economic impact from visiting teams, families, and fans.
