Trump Signs Bill, Ends DHS Shutdown
President Trump on Thursday signed legislation ending the longest partial government shutdown in U.S. history at 75 days, hours after the House agreed by voice vote to fund most of the Department of Homeland Security. The bill reopens DHS components, including the TSA, Coast Guard, FEMA, and Secret Service, through Sept. 30. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin had warned funding would dry up by Friday, putting paychecks at risk for tens of thousands of workers. Funding for ICE and the Border Patrol was left out after Democrats objected and will be handled separately through budget reconciliation, a process Republicans can pass without votes from Democrats. |
Oil, Gas Prices Hit Four-Year Highs
Brent crude topped $126 a barrel Thursday, a four-year high, as the Iran war enters its third month, with the crucial Strait of Hormuz shipping lane effectively closed. U.S. gas prices climbed to $4.30 a gallon on average, the highest since July 2022, with drivers paying $1.32 more per gallon than before the war began Feb. 28, according to AAA data. California leads the nation at $6.01 a gallon, while Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington also averaged above $5. See your state's price here. |
California's High-Speed Train Costs Soar
The cost of California's high-speed rail project has surged to $231 billion, up from an original $33 billion estimate, prompting one state lawmaker to call it the “most wasteful government project in probably world history." The project, first funded in 2008, was supposed to connect San Francisco and Los Angeles by 2020. Its scope has since been scaled back to a 171-mile Central Valley corridor between Merced and Bakersfield. Expected ticket prices have nearly doubled from early estimates. Ridership projections have also fallen sharply, from roughly 95 million annual passengers by 2030, cited in early planning documents, to long‑term Authority estimates of about 36 million by 2060. GOP state Sen. Tony Strickland and Independent Rep. Kevin Kiley are among those calling for the project to be scrapped entirely, predicting the next governor will abandon it given California's ongoing budget deficits.
