FBI Raids Spring Home Connected to Altman Attack
FBI agents raided a Spring home yesterday for evidence related to 20-year-old Daniel Moreno-Gama, the suspect accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's San Francisco home on Friday. No one was injured in Moreno-Gama's attack, and he was arrested hours later when he tried to break into OpenAI's office with the intent to burn it down, according to investigators. He allegedly drove from Spring to San Francisco to kill Altman and other tech executives, motivated by anti-AI views outlined in a manifesto he was carrying. California prosecutors have charged Moreno-Gama with attempted murder, and the Justice Department levied federal charges yesterday for attempted damage and destruction of property by means of explosives and possession of an unregistered firearm. Moreno-Gama was the author of a Substack blog featuring several essays expressing concerns about artificial intelligence, and he was a member of an anti-AI activist group on Discord, which banned him from using its products on Monday. |
Austin Gun Store Employee Charged with Murder
An employee of an Austin gun store has reportedly been charged with murder in a fatal shooting at a local bar on Friday night. Michael Cargill, owner of Central Texas Gun Works, claims the unidentified employee acted in self-defense. Several people injured in the melee sought care at local hospitals, according to police. Authorities have not provided information about the victim or suspect. During a Saturday press conference, Cargill claims two of his employees visiting the Cabana Club were mistaken for members of another group and got involved in a fight that left one of them unconscious. The other employee "made the decision to pull out his firearm and stop the threat." "My employee did exactly what I would have done and exactly what he's been trained to do," Cargill said. "They defended themselves. They were being attacked. Someone tried to kill them." |
El Paso Artist Hal Marcus Dies
Celebrated El Paso artist and musician Hal Marcus passed away Sunday at the age of 74 following a battle with pancreatic cancer. Marcus is known for his pop-surrealist paintings of scenes in and around El Paso. For the past 30 years, he operated a local gallery where he sold his works along with those of other artists, many of whom he mentored. He was also a children's book illustrator and a drummer for two bands. "He changed me in so many ways, always more and more true to who I was created to be," said Luke Lowenfield, the author of several children's books. Last year, Lowenfield bought the artist's 9-by-11-foot painting El Paso Gracias a Dios after federal officials ordered its removal from Chamizal National Memorial. San Antonio photographer Billy Calzada, who grew up in El Paso and used to rent from Marcus, called him "a treasure beyond measure." Ysella Fulton Slavin, whose mother cultivated the artist's talents when he was a freshman in high school, said Marcus "was always like a big brother to me." |
