Ohio Engineers Power Artemis II Mission

NASA’s Artemis II mission lifted off Wednesday evening from Cape Canaveral, Florida, sending astronauts back to the moon for the first time in more than 50 years, with the Buckeye State playing a key role in the historic effort.

NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland conducted testing for extreme space conditions on the Orion spacecraft ahead of the mission, and local engineers will monitor real-time data from the spacecraft.

Companies across Ohio also contributed, including L3Harris in Mason, which developed avionics described as the “brain” of the Space Launch System.

The mission launched at 6:24 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Astronauts will enter a series of Earth orbits before heading on a loop around the moon, then return and splash down in the Pacific Ocean after about 10 days.

Jury Deadlocked in FirstEnergy Bribery Trial

A jury in the bribery trial of former FirstEnergy executives Chuck Jones and Michael Dowling said on Tuesday it couldn’t reach a verdict on any charges after nine days of deliberations.

Prosecutors said they plan to retry Jones and Dowling, who are accused of bribing former Public Utilities Commission of Ohio Chair Sam Randazzo before he joined PUCO. Randazzo died by suicide in 2024.

The state also asked Summit County Common Pleas Judge Susan Baker Ross to schedule a new trial hearing within 30 days, while defense attorneys said they’ll file a motion for judgment of acquittal.

Baker Ross said at the time she would “refrain from making any rulings on any pending motions, as well as the motion for a mistrial.”

Storms Rock Northern Ohio

Northeast Ohio residents are dealing with severe storm damage after Tuesday’s storms knocked out power to more than 120,000 customers, a FirstEnergy spokesperson said.

By Wednesday morning, several northeast Ohio counties were placed under flood warnings, and over 15,000 customers remained without power. The storm also triggered tornado warnings in the Cleveland area, with wind gusts reaching 74 mph.

Downed trees were reported across the region, including one that struck a house in Wayne County. Western Ohio also reported trees blocking roads and damage to highway signs. Photos of storm damage can be seen here.
