Taliban Releases Colorado Detainee

Afghanistan's Taliban authorities on Tuesday released Dennis Coyle, 64, of Pueblo, after holding him for more than a year.

Coyle, an academic who had been researching Afghan languages, was detained in Kabul in January 2025. Afghan authorities accused him of violating laws but never specified which ones.

Afghanistan's foreign ministry said it agreed to pardon and free Coyle ahead of Eid after receiving a plea from his family. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the release, calling it a "step towards ending the practice of hostage diplomacy."

Earlier this month, the U.S. State Department designated Afghanistan as engaging in wrongful detention. The department believes the Taliban is still holding at least three other U.S. nationals.

DIA Not Among ICE-Staffed Airports

President Trump on Monday sent ICE and other Homeland Security agents to 14 major U.S. airports to assist TSA operations during the partial government shutdown. See a map here.

ICE has not deployed to Denver International Airport (DIA). In a statement Monday, DIA said, "At this time, we have not received any communication indicating that ICE agents will be staffing our checkpoints" and that operations are normal.

Despite the hours-long wait times caused by understaffing at other airports, standard security lines at DIA were estimated to last no more than 7 minutes as of Tuesday.

The airport is still seeking gift card donations to support its unpaid TSA employees.

Owlets Rescued from Walmart

Two baby owls were reunited after falling from a nest that had been built inside a Lafayette Walmart's garden center.

The Lafayette Police Department said a "fluffy little owlet" had fallen from the nest, which was too high up for the bird to be returned. See a photo here.

The owlet was then taken to a raptor rehabilitation center, where police learned another owlet, found in the same area the day before, had already been taken by a "helpful person."

"Now, sibling owlets are at least together. Neither was injured from their falls," the department said, thanking both the animal protection officer and good Samaritan who assisted the baby birds.
