Lynchburg police warned that shoppers may have been recorded illegally in dressing rooms at eight area locations.

On March 14, authorities charged 26-year-old Derek Lee Beard with placing a recording device at a local Dick's Sporting Goods. As a result of an investigation, they said similar devices may have been discovered at Kohl's, TJ Maxx, Target, Plato's Closet, Mission Thrift, Millie's Living Cafe, and The Muse Coffee Company.

"We are asking anyone who used the changing rooms or bathrooms at the affected businesses between February 1, 2026, and March 12, 2026, to complete the secure and confidential LPD Victim Identification Form," police said in a statement.

Beard was found guilty of a similar charge in 2021.

Authorities said a boy between the ages of 5 and 10 years old drowned in a pool at a Virginia Beach Oceanfront hotel on Sunday afternoon.

Police officers and firefighters responded to an emergency call and found the child unresponsive, immediately attempting CPR and chest compressions.

The victim was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Authorities are investigating.

The Stafford County Planning Commission voted 4-3 to change a zoning code in a way that would allow construction of a Buc-ee's travel center off I-95 near the Courthouse Road exit.

The vote came after a public meeting at which most speakers opposed the project. "The only beavers that belong in Stafford are the ones that swim in the Potomac Run wetland," quipped resident Jeff Eastland, citing concerns about the environmental impact of the development.

At least 100 residents have apparently signed a letter that asks the Board of Supervisors to stop the plan. A public hearing will be held before the seven-member Board of Supervisors makes its final decision.

If approved, the 74,000-square-foot project could generate an estimated $1.9 million in annual tax revenue for the county.
