Article Icon 1Lawmakers Target Competency Loopholes

A new bipartisan bill seeks to revise Colorado's competency laws to ensure defendants accused of serious crimes and found incompetent to stand trial are not released without oversight.

Under a 2024 law, judges must dismiss cases against suspects deemed incompetent and not likely restorable. Due to limited space in mental health facilities, the statute has allowed some violent defendants to be released, generating public scrutiny.

Senate Bill 149 would establish and fund placement pathways to ensure those defendants are civilly committed or placed in secure care. It would also let prosecutors retry dismissed cases if they believe competency has been restored.

Funding remains a key hurdle in the legislation, but lawmakers expect more clarity surrounding its implementation next month.

Crews quickly contained a fire that broke out at Buckley Space Force Base in Aurora on Sunday. In Mesa County, the 58-acre Brushy Ridge Fire, which ignited Thursday, hit 50% containment Sunday night.

Fire danger ramped up Monday, prompting Red Flag Warnings across the Front Range, where forecasts called for 30 to 40 mph gusts, relative humidity as low as 9%, and highs in the low 80s.

A cold front will drop highs to the 50s today ahead of widespread rain showers this evening. In the high country, the showers will fall as snow, possibly leaving 2 to 6 inches at the highest elevations through tomorrow.

Sunshine will return Thursday, sending highs back to the 70s, but a second storm on Friday could impact the Rockies' home opener at Coors Field.

Article Icon 1Red Rocks Kicks Off 85th Season

Concertgoers flocked to Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Friday for the sold-out opening night of the iconic amphitheatre's 85th anniversary season.

The venue has nearly 150 shows planned now through November, with headliners like Sublime, Ice Cube, Paul Simon, Yo-Yo Ma with the Colorado Symphony, Brit Floyd (a Pink Floyd tribute band), and Evanescence. See the lineup here.

Red Rocks is also debuting two new upgrades: a permanent merchandise building, which replaces a tent structure, and an east-facing terrace included in the original late-1930s plans but never built.

The terrace will not only provide more space for fans entering the venue, but serve as an additional vantage point for viewing the landscape, according to the venue's website.
