Medical Mandate Ban Advances

A state House committee advanced a proposed constitutional amendment to bar statewide medical mandates, including vaccine requirements in public schools.

If approved by both chambers, the measure would go directly to voters on the November ballot and would not require Gov. Katie Hobbs' signature.

The proposed ballot question comes as state Attorney General Kris Mayes co-leads a multistate lawsuit challenging changes to federal childhood vaccine guidance, including a narrowing of recommended vaccines.

Utility Election Pits Competing Visions

Phoenix-based Turning Point Action is backing nine candidates in the upcoming Salt River Project board elections, calling the April race pivotal to the state's energy future and opposing what it describes as Green New Deal–style policies.

In response, Valley-based Indivisible Mesa is organizing phone banks to mobilize voters against the Turning Point-backed slate.

The water and electricity utility serves more than 2 million people in central Arizona.

Turning Point Action says it wants different leadership priorities at the utility, while Indivisible Mesa backs candidates who favor renewable energy and tighter oversight of data center growth.

Runway Breaches Raise Concerns

A second runway incident at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport raised fresh concerns about airport security.

Police said Jaime Mendoza, 34, scaled a fence and ran toward a plane before a pilot and controllers spotted him on Monday. Mendoza, who was possibly experiencing a mental health issue, faces charges of trespassing and prohibited possession of a gun found in his car.

The incident followed a January breach in which Qais Ahmad Tillawi allegedly abandoned a rental car, cleared security without a valid boarding pass, and boarded a flight to Paris.

A Sky Harbor spokesperson said airport personnel are working closely with law enforcement and other partners to reinforce security measures.
