WM Open Week Arrives

WM Phoenix Open week kicked off Saturday in Scottsdale, with a concert and drone show that drew thousands to the opening festivities for one of the PGA Tour’s largest events.

The event draws the largest crowds of any PGA Tour tournament, with annual attendance typically estimated at 500,000 to 600,000.

First-round play will take place Thursday, with Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele among the field of about 120 professional golfers entered.

Warehouse Eyed for Detention Center

The Department of Homeland Security bought a 418,000-square-foot warehouse in Surprise for possible use as a 1,500-bed immigrant detention and processing center.

The purchase—costing about $70 million—sparked mixed reactions, with state lawmakers in the area voicing support and critics citing concerns about neighborhood impacts.

The purchase comes amid stepped-up immigration enforcement, including raids on Zipps restaurants that led to arrests of a hiring manager and dozens of suspected illegal immigrants.

On Friday, high school walkouts over nationwide enforcement activities included the arrests of three students in Mesa and Chandler on suspicion of assault and disorderly conduct.

Moon and Flagstaff Back in Focus

Flagstaff again finds itself playing a key role in training for lunar exploration, with a former local scientist among the newest astronaut candidates.

Lauren Edgar, a former scientist at the USGS Astrogeology Science Center in Flagstaff, is one of 10 astronaut candidates as NASA prepares to launch its Artemis II mission.

The upcoming mission will send astronauts around the moon to test spacecraft systems, life support, and navigation ahead of future moon landings.

Flagstaff's volcanic landscapes, including Sunset Crater, have long been used to train astronauts in navigation and fieldwork in moon-like terrain.
