Article Icon 1Water Project Veto Override Fails

The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday declined to override President Trump's veto of a bill aimed at completing a decades-old water infrastructure project in southeast Colorado.

The Republican-controlled House voted 248-177 in favor of the override, falling short of the needed two-thirds majority. Thirty-five Republicans, including all four from Colorado, joined House Democrats in supporting the override.

The vetoed bill would have shifted more of the project's cost onto the federal government for the Arkansas Valley Conduit, a pipeline currently under construction to deliver clean drinking water to 39 rural Colorado communities.

A second veto override—concerning a bill that would have expanded tribal lands in Florida's Everglades—also failed Thursday in a 236-188 House vote.

Renee Nicole Good, the 37-year-old woman fatally shot by an ICE agent during a Wednesday morning immigration operation in Minneapolis, was born and raised in Colorado Springs, her family confirmed.

Footage of the shooting has garnered national headlines and conflicting accounts. Federal officials say Good drove her SUV toward an agent, who then acted in self-defense. Local officials and witnesses challenge that account, suggesting she may have been trying to drive away.

Good’s death led to protests in Minneapolis and across the U.S., including her hometown of Colorado Springs. She leaves behind a 6-year-old child and family members still living in Colorado.

In a social media post, Gov. Jared Polis called for a full investigation into the shooting, saying Good’s family "deserves answers." The FBI and Minnesota authorities are investigating.

Article Icon 1Ouray Ice Fest Iceless

The Ouray Ice Fest, the largest ice-climbing event in North America, will take place without climbable ice this year due to unseasonably warm weather.

Unable to safely form its manmade ice walls, Ouray Ice Park—host of the competitions, demonstrations, and festivities—is "swapping pure ice for serious alpinism" in a pivot to ice-free climbing.

Rebranded as the Ouray Ice(less) Fest, the four-day event will go ahead as scheduled, Jan. 22-25, with a new activity lineup focused on dry tooling, crevasse rescue, and other technical skills.

While the festival will go on, its lack of ice and the delayed opening of the park, a mainstay of the local economy, is expected to pose setbacks for the small southwestern town.
