Marijuana Petitions Under State Scrutiny

The DeSantis administration asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Attorney General's office to investigate marijuana referendum petitions processed by the Broward Supervisor of Elections Office in Fort Lauderdale.

Secretary of State Cord Byrd and the attorney general's prosecutor identified concerns about the verification of signatures on petitions seeking to put a statewide marijuana legalization referendum on the ballot this year.

Investigators are targeting petition circulators who were terminated for alleged fraud by Smart & Safe Florida, the group backing the constitutional amendment. Officials have not announced that any charges have been filed.

The group needs at least 880,062 valid signatures by Saturday's deadline, but state records show only about 760,002 verified so far.

Citing the Feb. 1 deadline to verify the referendum petitions, Byrd wrote in a letter to County Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott that it was "imperative that the concerns raised during the audit be addressed now."

PBI Nears Trump Renaming

State senators unanimously advanced legislation Tuesday that would rename Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) as Donald J. Trump International Airport, moving the proposal closer to final approval.

Under a bill first introduced by Palm Beach Gardens State Rep. Meg Weinberger and sponsored by Sen. Debbie Mayfield, airport naming would fall under state, not local, authority. As part of that measure, PBI would be renamed in honor of President Trump.

An adopted amendment would require Federal Aviation Administration approval and secure rights to use Trump's name at no cost, addressing concerns about potential trademark fees.

Palm Beach County officials have warned that the change could entail significant rebranding costs, take up to 2 years to complete, and increase security risks amid heightened protests.

Water Restrictions Imposed

The Southwest Florida Water Management District declared a severe water shortage on Tuesday, with the board voting to institute a phase II drought restriction that will remain in place until July.

The restriction applies to all of Citrus, DeSoto, Hardee, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Sarasota, and Sumter counties; portions of Charlotte, Highlands, and Lake counties; the city of Dunnellon and The Villages in Marion County; and the portion of Gasparilla Island in Lee County.

All residents, including those using private wells, will be required to follow one-day-per-week outdoor watering restrictions beginning Feb. 8 through July 1.

The region received below-average rainfall during its summer rainy season and currently has a 13-inch regional rainfall deficit compared to the average 12-month total.
