Victims receive an online notice stating that the funds in their bank account are no longer safe and must be transferred to a federal banking institution in the form of gold. Once the victim of the scam acquires the gold, a courier, who sometimes doesn't even know what they're transporting, picks it up and takes it straight to the criminals. Officials warn that most victims of fraud never recover their lost money. In a similar scam, a Florida couple was duped into "helping" with a Federal Trade Commission investigation. The couple was swindled out of their $1.3 million retirement fund in an elaborate scam involving Bitcoin ATMs and gold bullion transactions. The Federal Bureau of Investigation says Florida ranks third in the country for the most losses from internet-based crimes. Floridians lost $1.072 billion from scams in 2024, with over 50,000 complaints of fraud received by Florida law enforcement. | New Proton Cancer Treatment Center Southwest Florida now has access to one of the most advanced cancer treatments in the country, with the opening of the region's first proton therapy center in Lee County. Southwest Florida Proton is the only advanced radiation therapy on Florida's west coast. The 42,000-square-foot facility is one of just 46 in the country and among a handful in Florida. The closest comparable system is in Miami. Patients lie on a table beneath the machine that delivers targeted proton beams to tumors. The system cost $80 million and includes a 110,000-pound accelerator and a 50,000-pound counterweight. It is housed in a three-story section of the building and took over a year to install and calibrate. Proton therapy is more advanced than traditional photon radiation. It allows for greater precision and limits damage to surrounding healthy tissue by targeting tumors more directly. | New License Plate Designs At least nine new specialty license plate designs are among the legislation proposed for lawmakers in the next session, which begins on Tuesday. You can see the full list here. Each specialty plate costs an additional $15 to $25 a year. Part of the proceeds go to an organization associated with the plate. If approved, the bills take effect on Oct. 1. The Ultimate Fighting Championship Foundation, which would use funds raised to support nonprofits, is seeking a plate with the words "UFC Lives Here." SB 246 was proposed by Sen. Joe Gruters (R-Sarasota) and Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez (R-Doral). HB 571 would establish an "Endless Summer" license plate designed specifically for motorcycles, while Miami Carol City High School (SB 592) and Miami Northwestern (SB 880) both seek alumni plates. In December, the state introduced its limited-edition America 250 license plate to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary in 2026. It is considered a standard plate with normal fees. | | | Flying together with our sponsor | | | | ➤ Miami: Minutes after the city commission voted on his appointment, James Reyes, the new city manager, said his administration will review the city's immigration enforcement agreement with ICE.
