Train Crash in Spain Kills at Least 40

At least 40 people were killed and 159 injured when two high-speed trains collided Sunday near Adamuz in southern Spain after one derailed and crossed onto an adjacent track.

A train carrying 289 passengers from Málaga to Madrid went off the rails at 7:45 p.m. and slammed into an incoming train with nearly 200 passengers traveling from Madrid to Huelva.

The impact sent carriages plummeting down a 13-foot slope, with some bodies found hundreds of feet from the crash site as passengers were thrown through windows. This video was recorded inside the Spanish train as passengers evacuated.

Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente said the cause remains unknown but called it "extremely strange" because it occurred on a straight, recently renovated stretch of track, with both trains traveling under the speed limit.

Winter Storm Threatens South

A powerful winter storm brewing in the Southwest could deliver widespread snow and ice from Texas to the southeast coast by late this week after rare weekend snowfall blanketed parts of Florida, Alabama, and Georgia.

The National Weather Service warns of a potentially disruptive ice threat covering Texas, the Lower Mississippi and Tennessee valleys, and even parts of the mid-Atlantic and Washington, D.C.

Wind chills this weekend are forecast to plunge to as low as 40 to 50 below zero in some areas, potentially marking the coldest air of the entire season.

Meteorologists caution it's still too early to predict exact precipitation amounts but call the pattern a classic setup for disruptive icing.
