A NASA high-altitude research aircraft made a safe emergency landing at Ellington Field in Houston on Tuesday after its landing gear malfunctioned.

Both crew members were unharmed. Phone video of the harrowing landing shows smoke and flames trailing the aircraft as it skidded down the runway.

The jet-powered WB-57 has been used for atmospheric research missions since the early 1970s. It can reach altitudes of 63,000 feet, has a range of 2,500 nautical miles, and can stay airborne for more than six hours. NASA operates three of the aircraft out of Ellington Field.

It's unknown what caused the landing gear to stop working. "NASA will lead a thorough investigation," said spokesperson Bethany Stevens, adding the agency "anticipates no impact to Artemis II operations."

Article Icon 1Coffee Shop Manager Quits Over ICE Discount

A Dallas-based coffee shop was mired in controversy after a dozen employees resigned over a policy they assumed required them to give ICE agents a discount intended for local first responders.

After a shooting at the ICE detention facility in Dallas last September, the manager of a nearby White Rhino coffee shop decided not to give the discount to agents.

"I made that a store policy to keep us safe," said Margot Stacy, explaining that the store gets "a lot of Muslim and Hispanic customers, people who only speak Spanish."

Following the shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis earlier this month, Stacy was told employees could not deny service to ICE agents. Shortly thereafter, store managers were directed to offer the first-responder discount to ICE agents, prompting Stacy to quit and speak out on social media.

"I wasn't going to compromise my moral standpoint in a company whose only moral was profit," Stacy said. White Rhino has since clarified that the discount is "only for uniformed, on-duty local first responders."

More than 12,000 homes and businesses in East Texas were still without power yesterday morning. Dallas ISD and several other North Texas school districts canceled classes yesterday due to icy road conditions.

Police and fire personnel responded to 280 accidents in Dallas and 240 in Fort Worth over the weekend, while a 23-year-old man was arrested for doing donuts in a Jeep with a child inside the vehicle. Austin police responded to more than 2,200 calls for service.

A man in Sanger was rescued after falling into a pond where he was ice fishing, and a team of Austin paramedics bought groceries for an elderly diabetic woman whose blood sugar was low.

In Corpus Christi, volunteers used drones to locate at least 70 cold-stunned sea turtles that were brought to the Texas State Aquarium to recover. An aquarium staffer called the technology "a game changer."
