Article Icon 1 Scammer Poses As Camp Mystic Victim's Dad

Harris County authorities allege that a single mother from Florida posed as the father of a Camp Mystic flood victim for crowdfunding donations.

Maitlin White admitted she was looking for "a quick way to make some money" by impersonating Matthew Childress, whose 19-year-old daughter Chloe died in the July 4 floods.

Childress reported last year that a fraudulent GoFundMe page was using his name, leading authorities to kick off an investigation as early as July 10. The investigation revealed that White opened the GoFundMe four days after the floods.

White has been charged with impersonating Childress on two crowdfunding sites.

Article Icon 1The Alamo Acquires Rare Cannon From Battle

The Alamo has added to its cannon collection by acquiring a swivel cannon used during the Battle of the Alamo in 1836.

The 90-pound cannon would have been used from a fortification to quickly swivel towards approaching soldiers and fire.

The Alamo's latest acquisition was first discovered by Samuel Maverick, who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence and was present during the siege. Maverick found the buried cannon in 1852 while constructing his house in the location where Hotel Gibbs now sits, near the Alamo site.

Maverick set up the cannon as the base of a bird bath before it went missing in the 1950s, and was recently donated to the Alamo by a member of the Maverick family. Conservation work on the cannon includes an electrolysis bath to remove hardened sediment.

Nearly 2,000 personalized license plates were rejected by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles in 2025 for failing to meet decency standards.

Messages like "Y U UGLY," "YUR2SLO," and "UHATIN" were among 1,951 license plates that authorities deemed insulting, used sexual innuendo, or were vulgar, among other violations.

Other more memorable rejections included "F*OKLA," "UCLOWN," and "AWL HELL."

Among the most prolific months for rejected plates, October won out with 193, followed by June's 185. This year's indecent plates tally fell short of 2024's total.

New Data: Who You Hire to Protest Property Taxes Matters

With property taxes rising, many Texans assume any protest firm will do.

That's not the case.

Ownwell's recent 2025 market analysis reveals a startling performance gap. Other firms' fee structures across the state are shrinking the amount homeowners retain.

A few examples…

Dallas County:
The data reveals that Ownwell achieved an 88% win rate for homes priced between $250k and $500k—significantly outpacing the 74% average of traditional competitors.

Montgomery County:
This disparity is even greater. Homeowners kept 2.8x more net savings ($465 vs. $166) on mid-range homes ($500k-$750k) compared to those using top competitors.

It's becoming clear: Simply protesting isn't enough; who you protest with determines your refund amount.

When you open your tax bill or check your escrow for 2026 financial planning, ask yourself: "Did you get unsatisfactory results and leave money on the table compared to your neighbors?"
