Third Death at Fort Bliss Detention Center

Three detainees have died at the Camp East Montana ICE detention facility at El Paso's Fort Bliss within the past two months. The Jan. 3 death of 55-year-old Cuban national Geraldo Lunas Campos, in particular, has drawn widespread scrutiny.

Campos was admitted to the U.S. lawfully in 1996. He was convicted of several criminal charges since then, including sexual contact with a minor. He was apprehended by ICE in New York last July, transferred to Texas, and scheduled for deportation.

According to ICE, guards intervened when he tried to take his own life, and "during the ensuing struggle, Campos stopped breathing and lost consciousness."

A witness, however, said Campos was handcuffed when he was pinned to the ground by at least five guards, one of whom allegedly put him in a chokehold. The local medical examiner's office reportedly attributed the death to asphyxia from chest and neck compression, indicating a potential homicide.

In December, Francisco Gaspar-Andres of Guatemala, 48, died from liver and kidney failure. Victor Manuel Diaz, a 36-year-old from Nicaragua who was arrested earlier this month in Minneapolis, died last Wednesday of a suspected suicide.

Drone Manufacturer Moving to Allen

EagleNXT, a drone company founded in 2010, is moving its corporate headquarters from Wichita, Kansas, to Allen. The company designs and manufactures fixed-wing drones for use in agriculture, public safety, and warfare.

EagleNXT opted to relocate to North Texas over Arizona, New Mexico, and Florida due to its business-friendly tax environment and the region's deep talent pool. Allen reportedly provided the most attractive incentives, beating out neighbors Frisco, McKinney, and Plano.

EagleNXT has agreed to lease a 33,000-square-foot site for 7 years and aims to create around 50 jobs over the next two years, nearly doubling its current workforce.

With the move, EagleNXT will begin manufacturing its eBee VISION drone in the U.S. for the first time, reducing obstacles to federal government purchases. Last year, President Trump issued an executive order to boost U.S. drone production.

Coast Guard Station Getting $200M Rebuild

The U.S. Coast Guard Station on South Padre Island is getting a $200 million rebuild after a fire destroyed the facility last April. It's the largest "shore infrastructure construction project in Coast Guard history," according to a statement.

The fire, sparked by a generator during a power outage, forced personnel to relocate operations. In recent months, crews at the outpost have conducted patrols along the Rio Grande and apprehended Mexican nationals for illegal fishing in one of the service's "most complex operating environments."

The Haskell Company of Jacksonville, Florida, was awarded the job after the planning stage and contracting period were compressed by several months.

The project includes a new harbor operations center, waterfront infrastructure, housing, and a Joint Operations Center for collaboration with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Construction is expected to be completed by summer 2028.
