Additional Disaster Aid Detailed

An additional $531 million in disaster aid announced for Georgia this week will go to assist in areas not covered by traditional U.S. Department of Agriculture grants, officials said.

The funding will support areas such as timber, poultry, pecans, and specialty crops.

"It takes ten years for pecan trees to become profitable, and poultry investments are significant in the infrastructure you've got to build to be able to utilize that operation. With timber, it takes upwards of 20 to 25 years to get to that solid timber," state Agriculture Commissioner Tyler J. Harper said.

The funding brings Georgia's total federal disaster aid to more than $1 billion in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, officials said. Additionally, the state has made available more than $300 million in low-cost loans and other aid.

The USDA announced the awarding of the $531 million block grant on Tuesday. The funding is part of the $30 billion American Relief Act of 2025, signed into law under former President Biden.

Lawmakers Split Over Federal Shutdown

U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter, R-St. Simons Island, and other Republicans blamed Democrats for stalling a stopgap bill to prevent the partial federal government shutdown that began on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the state's congressional Democrats held firm in their party's demands for restoration of certain cuts in federal healthcare spending.

The shutdown is expected to impact some federal services deemed non-essential, but to what extent isn't clear. Georgia Tech said programs tied to federal contracts may be affected depending on how long the impasse lasts.

Retail and Amusement Center Eyed

Atlanta-based developer Pope & Land proposed an amusement center and mixed-use development for a 13-acre site off Poplar Road in Coweta County.

Details about any rides or other planned attractions were not reported.

The estimated $219 million project envisions two 175-room hotels, 340,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, and an amusement park by 2036, generating an estimated $8.7 million in annual tax revenue.

Last week, amusement center operator Herschend Family Entertainment announced the closing of its Malibu Norcross and Mountasia family fun centers in the Atlanta area.
