Police Save Toddler from Man With Machete

A toddler is safe after Phoenix police shot and injured a man with a machete who was holding the child hostage during a domestic dispute at an apartment Wednesday night, authorities said.

The toddler was safely removed from the apartment and treated for minor injuries. The unidentified man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries but is expected to survive.

Officers went to the apartment at about 10 p.m. in response to a 911 text about a domestic violence incident.

Old Post Office Gets New Life

The Old Vail Post Office building, built in 1908, is being restored as a welcome and heritage center to highlight the history of the town and Southern Arizona.

"This building tells everyday people's stories. It's a humble building. It's an adobe building. But it tells the kind of everyday stories of American life," said Gerald Lamb of the Vail Preservation Society.

The project, funded by grants and community contributions, emphasizes preserving the original adobe walls and windows. Students from a Cienega High School construction class are assisting with the work.

The center is scheduled to open next year.

U of A Study: MS Drug May Aid Bone Repair

A University of Arizona study found that an FDA-approved drug for multiple sclerosis may help bone fractures heal faster and stronger.

Researchers first noticed the bone-healing potential of 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) while studying other injuries, and subsequent tests on mice showed fractures healed "a lot faster and a lot better," according to Dr. John Elfar.

The drug increases bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2), a protein vital for bone repair, and could be lifesaving for elderly patients whose hip fractures often prove fatal within a year, he said.

Because 4-AP is already approved, clinical trials could move forward quickly once researchers secure funding.
