Tressel Won't Run for Governor

Republican Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel announced he will not run for governor in 2026, saying workforce and education priorities require his full attention.

Vivek Ramaswamy remains the favorite for the GOP nomination, having secured endorsements from the Ohio Republican Party and President Trump.

On Friday, the Ohio Conference of Teamsters endorsed Ramaswamy, breaking with its historical support for Democratic candidates.

Tressel, a former Ohio State head football coach, was elevated to lieutenant governor after then-Lt. Gov. Jon Husted filled Vice President JD Vance's former U.S. Senate seat.

$2M Federal Grant to Aid Ex-Mill Workers

The U.S. Department of Labor awarded Ohio $2 million to support employment and training services for the hundreds of workers affected by the Pixelle Paper Mill closure in Chillicothe.

After the mill announced plans to close, state leaders sought a buyer but those efforts failed. The facility shut down Aug. 10, resulting in 780 layoffs.

Chillicothe's paper industry dates to the early 1800s, when two Quaker brothers opened a mill on Kinnikinnick Creek. The site was later acquired by the Mead Corporation, and Pixelle Specialty Solutions assumed ownership in 2019.

Hospital Report Cards Mixed

Three Ohio hospitals received five stars for both overall quality and patient experience from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings.

Ten Ohio hospitals earned only two stars in the ratings, which analyzed treatment success for heart attacks and pneumonia, readmission rates, and safety. You can see a list here.

The hospitals awarded five stars for overall quality and patient experience are Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center, Memorial Hospital in Marysville, and Mercy Allen Hospital in Oberlin.

Hospitals given five stars for overall quality included The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Cincinnati VA Medical Center, Cleveland Clinic, and Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital.
