RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Historic Rivals: Howard Bisons and Morehouse Maroon Tigers Clash in HBCU NYC Classic
The Howard Bisons and the Morehouse Marron Tigers gathered an unremarkable crowd and asexpected the atmosphere was electric throughout the game. In a thriller matchup, Howard continues to improve on the season after losing the opener to Rutgers in dominating fashion.
They've managed to bounce back and truly turn the season around, defeating Mercyhurst and now Morehouse. The Bisons proved they were too much for the Maroon Tigers as they defeated them in convincing fashion, 35-21. Bisons quarterback Jaylon Tolbert played an exceptional game throwing for 267 passing yards and four touchdowns. Throughout the game, he was polarizing and it seemed whenever the Bisons needed a key play, he delivered.
What Happened in the Game?
Despite throwing four touchdowns, Tolbert threw a touchdown to four different receivers while doing so. In the opening quarter, the Bisons managed to score twice. Kasey Hawthorne's 3-yard touchdown run and Tolbert's 12-yard scoring toss to Se'Quan Osborne — for a 14-0 lead. The Maroon Tigers would respond with a turnover that led to a 68-yard touchdown drive by the Bisons. Ke'Untae Mosley broke tackles for a 33-yard touchdown reception. Howard would take a 21-0 lead going into intermission.
The Bisons have a loaded schedule ahead, however they are well-equipped and capable of withstanding the overwhelming schedule on the road. That said, one of the most exciting traditions based on the entire event is the battle of bands at halftime. The two bands didn't disappoint and were phenomenal. These two groups utilized a mixture of pop culture and current popular trends to conduct a masterpiece in front of thousands. In fact, several celebrities acknowledged the work of art.
At the start of the second half, Ajani Williams awkwardly caught the opening kickoff of the 3rd quarter, fumbled, and allowed Howard to recover the ball, giving them excellent field position and momentum. Essentially, the Bisons took this momentum and never looked back.
