The Boston Celtics are once again NBA champions. The organization's last championship was in 2008, when the team featured players such as Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Rajon Rondo. This was a team that featured veteran star players who were on the Celtics in hopes to win a championship. In 2007, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen were both traded to play for Boston, teaming them up and forming a superteam with Paul Pierce. They instantly won the championship in 2008, as soon as they formed the new Celtics team. However, this team was somewhat aging and with tough competition, couldn't keep up with other teams in the NBA. Ray Allen would later leave and join a rival team Miami with Lebron to win another ring without the Boston Celtics. The then GM, Danny Ainge decided to break up the team and start a new era for the Celtics. He would trade Garnett and Pierce and other key players to the Brooklyn Nets an exchange for role players and 4 future first round draft picks. At the time, this trade was looked at as a bad trade for the Boston Celtics as they traded their star players for future draft picks and role player. At the time, these kinds of trades were unheard of. Forward to the 2016 NBA Draft Lottery, the pick that the Nets traded for aging superstars turned out to be the third pick of the draft. Boston had full ownership of the pick and drafted Jaylen Brown. Next year, they would earn the first pick and would ultimately trade down for the 3rd pick to select Jayson Tatum. These two players turned out to be all-star players that have the potential to both end up as some of the best great players. The Boston Celtics would ultimately build a team around these two all-star caliber players in hopes to win the title. After making smart signings and trades, they would build arguably their best roster in decades and win the title in the 2023-24 NBA season. This championship is much different than the last one as they built their roster through trading old players for future picks and rebuild around their youth. Garnett, Allen, and Pierce were in their 30s when they won their first titles with the Celtics. This new Celtics team features all-stars Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, who haven't even turned 28 yet. The Celtics as of June 2024 have the best odds to repeat for another title and have the potential to be a future dynasty in the NBA. Due to this, we have started to see teams trade older players in exchange for draft picks to build around a young team. For example, Oklahoma City Thunder traded Westbrook and Paul George in exchange for young players and draft picks. A trade criticized back then has turned into a trade that saved the organization as young guys they got from the trade like Shai and picks they selected like Chet have turned out to be all-star caliber players. The Thunder are one of the best young teams in the NBA that have the chance to win the title in a few years down the road. The Celtics have changed how to rebuild and make trades as a team as their rebuild showed how successful it was for them to trade for draft picks. The Celtics have made first-round draft picks more valuable again as team wanting to rebuild like the Nets, Rockets, and Thunder now aim to get as many picks as possible. The teams championship will only encourage more teams to be like the Celtics and possible win a championship of their own.
