Tonight as Jeff Skinner was honored for his 1,000th career NHL game, the Buffalo Sabres made it a great night for him, getting a 6-2 win at home against the Capitals.
The Caps scored on their first shot of the game on a screened shot by Fehervary, 2:46 into the game on a shot from almost the blue line to put Washington up 1-0 on a play the defense was completely non-existent on. Zemgus Girginsons tied the game up on a tip in front off a Dahlin shot with 4:18 left in the first. The Sabres took their first lead on the power play with 3:01 left in the period, with JJ Peterka putting it past Lindgren in front on a nice backhand. The Sabres didn't generate many high danger scoring chances but they did sustain the puck well in the Caps zone.
JJ Peterka added to the lead with his second goal of the game with 9:06 left in the second period, getting the puck off a turnover right in front with plenty of time and space to make it 3-1 Buffalo. With 45.1 seconds left in the period, Dylan Strome put the Caps within one right in front of the net.
Dahlin made it a 4-2 game on a shot from the blue line that Lindgren probably should've saved, just 3:03 into the third. Less than two minutes later with 15:12 left in regulation, Tage Thompson added to it with a one timed tip in front from Jack Quinn on a great play by Zach Benson to set it up. Alex Tuch made it 6-2 only 45 seconds later, chasing Lindgren out of the net. That turned out to be the final.
FINAL: Sabres 6, Capitals 2
Really solid win for the Sabres tonight and I was glad to be there (although it sucked to lose all three of my bets on it). We did a good job of sustaining pressure on the Capitals, outshooting them 35-25, and outplaying them by an expected goal rate of 3.35-2.92 and UPL made some great save, especially early to keep us in it. Fun game to go to.
Congrats to Jeff Skinner. I'm a big fan of him and think he's a great piece on this team. Hell of an accomplishment. I do wish the Sabres would've had a longer ceremony for him. His silver stick ceremony was the shortest I've ever seen an NHL team do.
