Back pain, reducing screen time, running better meetings, and being a better parent...all top of mind going into this week.
Here are some thoughts on each:
Fitness (On Resting)
Stiff back?
Me too.
I'm taking a "de-load week" for the first time in well over a year. Many strength programs I've followed in the past call for a de-load week every 4th week.
Not taking time to recover seems to be the disciplined man's kryptonite. Consider this your reminder if you haven't done one in a while.
Habits (Creating Friction)
You want to make good habits easy and bad habits hard. It is easier to not eat cookies when they aren't in your home (making a bad habit hard).
My friend told me he unplugs his WIFI when he is not using it. I love this uncommon example of creating additional friction.
There is nothing bad about going online, you just don't want to have doom-scrolling be your default activity.
1 Tip For Better Meetings
Bezos shares (here) how he starts important meetings by having everyone read a memo. Once everyone is done, then they have their discussion. This is in contrast to the PowerPoint or verbally read agenda.
I'm only one week into trying this, but initial signal is good. We had a much more productive conversation.
On Kids:
Experts say 0-4 are the most formative years. This may or may not be true, but I think it is worth taking seriously if you have small children. My takeaway is to do more in front of my son: workout, read, resolve disagreement amicably, laugh, be nice to others, etc. Yes, play & be silly - but don't forget to do other things as well.
