Great end to 2023 as I went 6-3 on the NHL last night, winning 2.38 units, my third winning night in the last four days. 2024 begins today with the NHL's marquee event, as the Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken take hockey outdoors for the 2024 Winter Classic. Let's start off 2024 hot!
Kraken vs. Golden Knights (3:00)
The Winter Classic is my favorite event of the regular season every year, the NHL's marquee event as the league takes hockey back to its outdoor roots on New Year's Day. This year's matchup features the two newest NHL teams with the Seattle Kraken hosting the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, the home of the Seattle Mariners. This will be the first time either of these teams have played an outdoor game. Today will be the second matchup of the season between these teams after the Golden Knights won the first game 4-1 to open the season at home on October 10th in Vegas as the Stanley Cup banner went up to the rafters in The Fortress.
The Seattle Kraken haven't been good this season, coming into today's game with a 14-14-9 record, outside of the Western Conference playoff picture. They're easily playing their best hockey of the season right now though, coming into today's game on a four game win streak and eight game point streak, with a 6-0-2 record in their last eight games. On Friday night they beat the Flyers 2-1 at home on Justin Schultz's overtime game winner in a pretty evenly matched game. On the year, the Kraken have been pretty decent defensively, allowing an average of 2.97 goals per game, the twelfth-fewest in the NHL, on an average of 29.4 shots allowed per game. They lead the league in expected goals against, giving up an average of just 2.69 per game, and they've allowed the fourth-fewest high danger shots. Joey Daccord's been really solid in net, despite having just an 8-5-8 record this season. He has a 2.46 GAA, a .915 save percentage, and a shutout this year. Seattle's really struggled to score though. They've averaged just 2.65 goals per game, the fifth-fewest in the NHL, on an average of 29.6 shots per game. They have generated an average of 2.75 expected goals per game, the third-fewest in the league behind Chicago and San Jose, and the sixth-fewest high danger shots.
The Vegas Golden Knights have been fantastic this season, tied with Vancouver in points for first place in the Western Conference with a 22-10-5 record as they defend as Stanley Cup Champions. The Knights have been in quite the slump recently, ending a four game losing streak on Thursday night with a 3-2 win at home against the LA Kings. Vegas has been good on both ends of the ice this year. They've scored an average of 3.32 goals per game, the twelfth-most in the NHL on an average of 32.3 shots per game. They have generated the tenth-most expected goals, an average of 3.24 per game and the eighth-most high danger shots. Defensively, the Knights have allowed an average of only 2.76 goals per game, the ninth-fewest in the NHL. They've given up an average of 3.03 expected goals per game, the eleventh-fewest in the league and ninth-most high danger shots. Logan Thompson is projected to start in goal today with Adin Hill still out with injury. Thompson's been good this season with an 11-6-3 record, a 2.8 GAA, and a .902 save percentage.
Seattle's known for being a rainy city and although there isn't an rain projected in the forecast, Vegas is the better team here and I expect them to rain on the Kraken's parade. I like the Knights to win this game and I'll take the Cup Champs for a unit. They're better on both ends of the ice, especially offensively.
I really love the under in this game with both of these teams being very good defensively this season. Additionally, Winter Classic tend to typically trend under. I'll take the under 6 in this matchup for 1.5 units.
Game Bets
