Last night's two game NHL slate sucked for me, going 1-3 to lose 3.75 units. Tonight we have a three game slate to head into the much needed All Star break. Let's head into it hot with some wins tonight!
Red Wings vs. Senators (7:00)
This Atlantic Division matchup doesn't look all that great but based on the first three games this season between these teams and the way both teams are playing now, it could be a fun matchup. The Red Wings, coming off a 5-2 win against the Golden Knights, have three wins in their last four games, holding a five point lead over the Isles for the second Wild Card spot in the East. They've played really well offensively, but have struggled a bit on the back end. The Senators are the worst team in the Atlantic, but they're playing decent right now. On Monday night they came back from a 3-0 first period deficit to beat the Predators 4-3 in overtime (split for me on that game) and have a 4-1-2 record in their last seven games. Ottawa's offense hasn't been terrible, but their defense has been one of the worst in the league. All three games between these teams earlier this year have had quite different results, with the Red Wings winning 5-2 in Ottawa, the Sens answering back with a 5-4 overtime win at home, and then winning in dominant fashion with a 5-1 win on the road in Detroit. I like the Red Wings to win here at home to even the season series. I'll take the Detroit for 1.5 units along with the puck line for half a unit. I also like the over, which I'll take at the alternate 6.5 line for a unit.
Predators vs. Kings (7:30)
This should be a decent matchup although both of these teams are really struggling right now. The Predators, coming off a 4-3 overtime loss where they blew a 3-0 lead in the first period against the Sens on Monday, have just one win in their last five games. They've struggled a bit offensively, but have been decent enough defensively. The Kings are on a horrible skid, falling to a three way tie with Nashville and St. Louis for the Wild Card spots in the West. The break can't come soon enough for this team. Coming off a 4-3 overtime loss in St. Louis (win for me), they're on a four game losing streak with just two wins in their last 16 games. Statistically LA has been decent on both ends of the ice. The first game between these teams a couple weeks ago in LA was close with the Preds getting a 2-1 win on the road. I like Nashville to win again at home tonight and I'll take them as a dog for half a unit. I'd lean the under but not enough to bet it.
Ducks vs. Sharks (10:30)
Such a lousy game to head into All Star break with the two of the three worst teams in the league (somehow Chicago is now even worse than the Sharks are). I'm not overanalyzing this game. I think the Ducks are the better team here and should win it at home, but no way am I betting them at -185. I'll lay off this game entirely and head into the All Star break myself before this game even faces off.
