As Zechariah, a Levitical priest, entered the cold, dimly-lit chamber at the center of the Temple complex in Jerusalem, he paused to allow his eyes to adjust. Compared to the loud and bustling courtyard he had left behind, where the sound of prayers mixed with the cries of terrified animals and the hiss of fires, this room was eerily quiet and empty save three golden instruments of worship.
