Ringside Report: Maisey Rose Courtney Improves To 5-0
The only surprise was the closeness of the scorecard. Maisey Rose Courtney was a thoroughly impressive winner against the tough Italian Martina Bernile. Courtney looked a wide winner. From ringside, I had her winning every round, and I couldn't really see a case for Bernile being given even a share of a round.
Courtney served up her best performance to date and looks to be maturing into a serious prospect in the flyweight division. Courtney showed good distance control and patience, and in truth, won with several gears in hand.
The unbeaten prospect will probably have one eye on next week's Commonwealth super-flyweight contest between Emma Dolan and Nicola Hopewell. Courtney strongly disputes an amateur loss to Hopewell, and if the Worksop fighter leaves Sheffield a Commonwealth champion, Courtney will surely be interested in renewing hostilities. A fight with the former Olympian Ginny Fuchs would also be a nice little test for both. But whoever Courtney fights in the coming months, it will likely take a very good fighter to beat her.
