Domingo German has joined baseball immortality as the 24th pitcher in Major League History to throw a perfect game. The last time a perfect game was thrown was by Felix Hernandez on August 15, 2012. He also becomes the 4th player in Yankee franchise history to complete the feat stamping himself in the record books with Don Larsen, David Wells and David Cone.
'When you think about how many pitchers in the history of baseball have done it and to be part of history now, it's exciting," German said. " And you mention Felix [Hernandez] being the last one to do it and I've said it before, growing up he was my idol. I really looked up to the way he pitched so now to be on that list following him means a lot."
German was able to get the 27 outs with just 99 pitches and nine strikeouts in his outing.
"He was fantastic tonight," Higashioka said. "He deserves all the credit. I'm just happy for Domingo [German]; he's had a rough last couple of starts and he's kind of been dragging a little bit. But just for him to do this and get back to being himself and for all of it to come together tonight is amazing."
The Yankees also broke out on the offensive side, scoring eleven runs on eleven hits, aiding German with a comfortable lead.
The floodgates opened up in the fifth inning with Kyle Higashioka hitting a double followed by four singles, taking a 7-0 lead.
Although Domingo had a perfect outing, the defense also shined in support of their pitcher. Anthony Rizzo made a stellar play with a hard-line drive in the fifth inning that ended up being a game-saving play for German.
While German continued to dominate, the offense stayed on track with a sacrifice fly in the seventh and a double in the ninth by Josh Donaldson to add some insurance leading 11-0.
German now sits on top alone as the first Dominican-born pitcher to throw a perfect game in league history.
Now with the rubber match against Oakland on Thursday at 3:37 p.m. The Yankees will see if the momentum of Domingo's perfect game can catapult the team into a winning groove as the rest of the players make their way back to the field.
