2022 has been an eventful year. I've had four jobs since January, but I've finally landed on my feet in Digital Marketing. One constant throughout this year has been my dedication to fitness. According to my Strava stats, I've been active for over 300 days, been in the gym for over 320 hours, and I'm amongst the top 1% of Strava users. And according to my Grammarly stats I've written over 1 million words since the end of 2019!
I've learnt so much about life and business this year. Maybe you could also learn a thing or two from my experiences. Here's what happened in 2022 and my plans for 2023.
January to April
The first edition of this website was launched as a Fitness blog at the beginning of January. I shared weekly blog posts with the aim of helping people through fitness. You can still see my archive of blog posts on the Portfolio page.
I was a support worker, but by March, I was becoming restless and wanted a new challenge. As I already had experience in the Sports Turf industry, I applied for a job as a Greenkeeper - all while consistently writing blogs.
My application was a success, and I was due to start the week after I got back from Mexico. 10 days on a beach in Mexico was more than enough to reset my body and mind ready for whatever was to come.
May to August
The period between May and August was the time when I learnt most about myself, but also the point where I felt most lost.
After a 10-day break in Mexico, I started my new job as a Greenkeeper. Working outside and being physical was something that I knew, and I enjoyed the hot summer in the sun getting a beautiful farmer's tan.
During this time, I also fell out of love with writing blogs. I was crippled by my own thoughts and fears. Every day became mundane, and I just wanted to be back on that beach in Mexico. It was time to make a change.
September to October
I left my job and decided that this was the time to take charge of my life, rather than wait for what I want to come to me.
I got a job at Tesco to pay the bills and applied for Digital Marketing roles. My blogs started to become more regular as I put a lot of my focus and energy into breaking into the marketing/ writing industry. Four years of trial and error with career paths solidified my desire to be in this industry, so I was going to do everything that I could to get started.
November to now
Within the space of a week, I applied for a Digital Marketing Apprenticeship, had two interviews, and had my first day. The end of October was a surreal week, but I'm proud of myself for doing it. It's definitely a change of pace coming from only knowing physical work. Sometimes I miss the physical nature of a job like Greenkeeping, but working in an office has helped me with the areas of my life that I value the most.
I've been told since working in my current role that this website played a big part in why they wanted me. Despite all the chopping and changing, self-doubt, and trying to figure everything out as I go, I made it! The "made it" in question is just starting my career four years into professional life…
2023
I plan for 2023 to be a progression of 2022. To quote a record-breaking British Prime Minister, "Growth, growth, and more growth". Not only professional growth but also growth in my personal life and fitness.
Rhyshanscombe.com is now my freelance writing portfolio website. I've been tweaking the site over the past few weeks to look how I want it to (as I've been doing all year), and I'm building a second site which will be where I share blogs. What are these blogs going to be about? I guess you'll have to keep an eye on my social media channels to stay updated as and when it launches…
