Fishing Report: Finally Caught a Couple in Hermosa Beach

I finally had some luck in the South Bay LA. This fishing season (spring/summer) has been particularly bad in South Bay LA. It seems to be better in San Diego and Orange County, but for some reason the fish have been staying away from this area.

It's still slow, but at least alive. I caught a decent Yellow Fin Croaker and a small Corbina.

Still using the Carolina Rig, 3/4 oz sliding sinker, 8lb flouro leader and #6 mosquito hook. Fishing with sand flea tipped with a few of the small clams I'm finding on the beach. That combo seemed to be the winner, since both are abundant on the shore.

It gives me some ideas going forward. I think clam Fishbites would work, tipped with either sand flea or mussels, depending on the availability of sand fleas. Might be worth looking into a heavier setup with a sputnik sinker and a high-low rig, a variation of the successful pompano rig. But I'm not spending money right now, so that experiment will have to wait.

Speaking of experiments, I'm going to take the new inflatable kayak out into the Redondo Beach Harbor and target some perch. I've heard that's working fairly well, compared to the drought on the beach. Though days like today are just fine for me, my standard for a good outing is pretty low - a couple fish and minimal seaweed is all it takes.
