AUBURN, AL- Walker Kessler finished the game with 12 points, 10 rebounds and recorded 8 blocks in the No. 3 Auburn Tigers (25-3, 13-2 SEC) 77-64 win over the Ole Miss Rebels (13-15, 4-11 SEC)
Auburn bounced back from a close 63-62 loss to the Florida Gators. In the last two games, the Tigers - with exception of Jabari Smith - struggled from shooting from deep. Smith shot 11-of-15 from the three-point line while the rest of the team shot 5-of-21 (23.8%) from deep.
The Tigers turned things around early against Ole Miss, eventually finishing the game shooting 9-of-25 (36%) from deep.
Wendell Green Jr. set the tone with back-to-back three-pointers early in the first half. Zep Jasper followed with two three-pointers of his own and the Tigers took off from there.
Green Jr. struggled in the previous four games shooting 3-of-18 (16.6%) from deep but redeemed himself with an efficient three-point shooting night. He finished the game with 14 points while shooting 3-of-8 (37.5%) from deep.
Then there was a great performance from Walker Kessler.
Kessler made history tonight for the Tigers, breaking Kyle Davis' record for the most blocks in a single season for an Auburn player with 131 blocks. The forward entered the game just four blocks shy of breaking Davis' record that was set in the 2002-03 season.
Within the first two minutes of regulation, he already had two blocks and had another block to tie the record, eventually recording his 127th block to break the record with 2:49 left in the first half. He didn't stop there and recorded another block before entering halftime.
In the last five games, he has averaged six blocks per game; he nearly had that by halftime.
Jasper and Jabari Smith also contributed with 15 points from both players.
Ole Miss Struggled To Find The Basket
The Rebels struggled to find an offensive rhythm all night and have now lost five of their last six games.
This season, Ole Miss averaged 68.8 points per game while shooting 43.7% from the field. Tonight, they only scored 64 points and just couldn't get the ball to fall in the basket.
They finished the game shooting 22-of-58 (37.9%) from the field, 6-of-19 (31.6%) from the three-point line, and 14-of-20 (70%) from the free-throw line. Jarkel Joiner was their leading scorer with 13 points off of the bench.
Tigers Giving Day
Today, the Auburn Tigers hosted an initiative called Tigers Giving Day, a fundraising event in which people get to pick and choose to donate to multiple Auburn projects.
Some of those projects include helping the Auburn Alumni Association's Young Council to create a scholarship for riding seniors to help cover professional development expenses.
Another project is creating funding to help teach kids about robotics in underserved schools and many more.
Coach Bruce Pearl made an advertisement with Jabari Smith, Dylan Cardwell, Walker Kessler, and Babatunde Akingbola to help push the initiative.
"We're going to TigerGiving.org and we're going to support some amazing projects," said coach Pearl. "To hard to choose from any of them, (then) let's support them all."
