Houston, TX - The Kansas State Wildcats' overwhelmed the LSU Tigers, 42-20, to claim the TaxAct Texas Bowl Championship.
The Wildcats' offense was scorching hot, putting up 442 yards overall. Quarterback Sam Thompson and running back Deuce Vaughn led the Wildcats. The two dominated throughout the entire game; Thompson finished the game with 259 yards and 3 touchdowns while Vaughn ended the game with 21 carries, 146 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Their defense was also special and contained LSU's offense, holding the Tigers to just 138 passing yards.
Tempers Flare
Tensions were flaring between both teams before the game started.
These tensions continued throughout the game as LSU and Kansas State players would fight each other after a play was dead.
This is the first meeting between the two teams, but the bad blood between each other made it seem like they were bitter rivals. Even Wildcats' kicker, Ty Zentner, got into a scuffle with a couple of Tigers players.
Skylar Thompson Onslaught
The Wildcats' quarterback Thompson started the first half hot, finishing the first two quarters with two touchdowns and 158 yards. His 25-yard touchdown pass and his 5-yard touchdown pass were both caught by Malik Knowles.
Skylar was accurate with a lot of his throws and threw the ball deep the field when needed. He later threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to give the Wildcats a 35-7 lead.
Deuce Vaughn Gets #18
Deuce Vaughn had a strong start to the game with his short, but impactful runs. He ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the second quarter to give the Wildcats a 14-0 lead.
This touchdown run would be his touchdown No. 16 of the season for Vaughn. He would finish the first half with 14 carries for 40 yards.
Vaughn became a juggernaut in the second half; he ran for an 18-yard touchdown and caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Thompson.
Vaughn scored his final touchdown in the fourth quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run, giving K-State an insurmountable 42-14 lead. He finishes the season with 18 rushing touchdowns.
