What a year it has been on both Tours. It was a 2021 of change which produced a first time Grand Slam winner on both the ladies and men's section. It was a year of the passing of the torch to the next generation of players. Players such as Berrettini, Raducanu and Hurkacz seized their chances against faltering old guard playing some scintillating fearless tennis. A year of controversy . Naomi Osaka's enforced withdrawal from the French Open and coronavirus enforced regulations particularly vaccination mandates threatening participation of certain players in 2022 particularly the Aussie Open. Here is to 2021 and here are my best matches for the year starting with two players who had their best seasons on Tour.
5. GAUFF VS JABEUR(FRENCH OPEN 4TH ROUND)
Its unbelievable that Coco is only 17 years of age having made her pro debut two years ago at the tender age of 15. She surprised me a lot on clay this year winning in Parma and going further than she ever went at a Slam at Roland Garros reaching the quarters. She faced Ons Jabeur in the 4th round who won her first Tour title. Coco played aggressive tennis NEVER DROPPING serve. Coco is strong attacking the net which suits the clay court game well. This was impressive against the best drop shot artist in the women's game. Check out the first game of the second set at 30-40. Great movement confident volley at the net no intimidation. Coco would end the season a career high 22 in the world with Ons a bit higher at 10 with the later having an interrupted last quarter of the year due to injury and covid-19.
