Quarter finals in Chicago. Ukraine's Elina Svitolina seeded number one here taking on Tunisian Ons Jabeur seeded 6. A great hard court season for Elina which included a win in Chicago in the WTA250 tournament as well as a last eight appearance at the US open. Ons is having her best season yet including her maiden tour title in Birmingham, England on grass. There have been a few walkover wins in this tournament so I feared the worst seeing Elina's heavily taped up right leg. Both players labored on serve, making this match full of break point opportunities(25 all in all). Elina looked good breaking early to go 3-1 up. Check out the forehand down the line at 15-0 by Elina, showing that the injury had little effect on her. The turning point of the set came when Elina was 4-1 ahead and had break point to go a double break up. Ons was ruthless in punishing the short return from Elina. She would hold crucially in this game, had Elina won the game it would most certainly be curtains for the Tunisian for the set. Ons would go on to win next four games to win the set. Her go to best weapons of choice? The backhand drop shot and net volleys.

The number of break points in this one are also indicative of weak serving from both players. It is what it is. Ons served at 52% first serve whilst Elina at 56%. The difference maker was the winners during the rallies of which Jabeur had more. Watch how Ons broke Elina's serve first game of the second set at 40-30, the forehand setting up the point nicely during the rally. As the match played on Elina started to show effects of the injured right leg. Check out her movement in the next game at 1-0, she was hobbling a bit there as she struggled to go after the ball. She needed to keep the points as shirt as possible. Watch what happened when she did so at 2-0(15-0). Unfortunately she didn't do so frequently.
