On Wednesday, the St. Louis Cardinals (88-69) and Milwaukee Brewers (95-63) played the second game of a 3-game series. The Cardinals were able to win Game 1 of the series on Tuesday. In doing so they extended their winning streak to 17 and clinched a spot in the postseason.

With the Cardinals clinching a spot in the playoffs on Tuesday, both of these teams will continue to play into the postseason. The Cardinals as a wild-card team and the Brewers as the NL Central champions.

The Cardinals would look to extend their historic streak with Miles Mikolas (2-2, 4.15 ERA) on the mound. On the other hand, the Brewers looked to Adrian Houser (9-6, 3.34 ERA).

Brewers End the Streak

The Brewers wasted absolutely no time in this one.

With Willy Adames on third and Christian Yelich on second, Eduardo Escobar came up to bat with an early RBI opportunity. Escobar would ground out to first but would drive in Adames in the process to give the Brewers an early 1-0 lead.

After the Brewers took the early lead, both offenses went quiet. Houser did a good job of not allowing the Cardinals to get anything going and Mikolas was able to slow the Brewers down.

Houser would be pulled after the fifth inning. He allowed just 3 hits, no runs, walked 2, and struck out 1 on 67 pitches. A very solid outing.

Mikolas would not last much longer.

In the top of the sixth, Mikolas gave up a 2-run homer to Daniel Vogelbach. The homer extended the Brewers' lead to 3-0.

Mikolas then gave up a single to Lorenzo Cain and was pulled from the game. He pitched 5.2 innings, allowed 7 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, and struck out 7 on 96 pitches.

Manny Pina would add a solo homer in the seventh to extend the Brewers' lead to 4-0.

The Brewers bullpen would follow in Houser's footsteps and hold the Cardinals scoreless. They would hold on to win 4-0 and end the Cardinals' 17-game winning streak.

The Wrap Up

The longest NL winning streak in the last 80 years finally came to an end. The Brewers held to just 3 hits and kept them off the scoreboard.

These teams have now split the first 2 games of this late-season series. They will play the rubber match tomorrow afternoon in St. Louis.

Veteran J.A. Happ (9-8, 5.86 ERA) will take the mound for the Cardinals in the finale. Brett Anderson (4-9, 4.30 ERA) will take the mound for the Brewers in the finale.
