Trump Vows $5,000 Checks if GOP Wins

President Trump pledged Wednesday night to send every U.S. citizen a $5,000 check, but only if Republicans keep control of both the House and Senate in November.

He made the offer at the Republican Party's first-ever midterm convention in Dallas, urging supporters to "pretend that I'm on the ballot" so he can "finish the job."

Trump likened the checks to a company paying its shareholders, but added one catch: the money would have to be spent in the U.S. "We don't want you going to Canada," he said.

He offered few details on how the payments would work, and vowed to campaign in roughly 35 competitive House and Senate districts before Nov. 3.

Iran Hits Back After US Sinks Tankers

Iran said Wednesday it attacked 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz, including two U.S. Navy warships and eight oil tankers, and fired ballistic missiles toward a U.S. base in eastern Jordan.

The U.S. military said no warship was hit and that every attempted attack by Iran's Revolutionary Guard failed, calling Tehran's claim "completely FALSE."

The exchange followed Tuesday's U.S. strikes that sank five Iranian tankers, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying Iran will lose tankers every time it targets an American warship.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, topped $100 a barrel Wednesday for the first time since July. President Trump brushed off the spike earlier this week, arguing prices will drop significantly once the war ends.

AI Insider Quits, Warning: It 'Could Kill Us All'

A researcher at AI giant Anthropic resigned Tuesday, warning the technology "could kill us all by the end of the decade." Jacob Coxon, who worked at both OpenAI and Anthropic, wrote on X that "neither company is acting responsibly." Read his full resignation thread here.

He says the labs are racing to build AI that improves its own code, each version writing a smarter one, until the result is "superhuman systems that can hack anything" and "acquire real power and resources."

It has happened on a small scale. In July, an OpenAI model went rogue during testing and hacked Hugging Face, another AI company, on its own. Coxon called it a "warning shot."

Anthropic's alignment lead, Evan Hubinger, responded that "we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans," putting the odds above 10% within a decade, though he said today's models pose little risk.

A bipartisan AI Kill Switch Act in the House would let the Department of Homeland Security shut off models that threaten the public.

GE Aerospace Agrees to $11.75B Deal

Cincinnati-based GE Aerospace agreed to buy Cleveland-based Consolidated Precision Products for $11.75 billion, a deal that would bring a 6,600-employee supplier of critical aircraft and defense components into the jet-engine giant.

CPP makes castings used in commercial and military aircraft, helicopters, weapon systems, and industrial gas turbines. GE expects demand for turbine blades and vanes to rise more than 30% by 2030.

GE says it plans to invest in CPP and expand capacity, potentially adding jobs, although it hasn't announced how many or where.

The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2027, pending regulatory approval.

Feds Recover 79 Missing Children

Federal authorities located or recovered 79 missing and endangered children ages 6 to 17 during Operation Meridian, a monthlong effort the U.S. Marshals Service called the largest missing-child operation in Ohio history.

The operation focused on runaways and children believed to be facing trafficking, abuse, neglect, or other dangers.

Investigators worked across Ohio and followed leads into Michigan and as far away as Georgia while coordinating with dozens of agencies.

The children were connected with medical care, counseling, family reunification, and other services while investigations continued.

Four Ohio Universities Receive F Grades

Four Ohio universities received failing grades in the 2027 College Free Speech Rankings: The Ohio State University, Kent State University, Oberlin College, and the University of Dayton.

Ohio State ranked No. 174, Kent State No. 189, Oberlin No. 194, and Dayton No. 237. Wright State University was Ohio's highest-ranked school at No. 64, followed by Kenyon College, Miami University, and Bowling Green State University.

The rankings, published by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), draw on nearly 63,000 student responses and consider factors including comfort expressing ideas, self-censorship, openness, political tolerance, campus speech policies, and controversies.

FIRE said 121 schools nationwide received an F, while just 24 earned a C or better. The complete rankings are available here.
