Flash Flood Emergency Hits Perry County

The National Weather Service issued its top-level flash flood emergency for Crooksville early Tuesday after 3 to 5 inches of rain fell overnight.

Crews pulled people from their homes in Crooksville, where 10TV saw water halfway up the pumps at a gas station and rescues underway near West Main and Elizabeth streets around 6 a.m. Shelters opened at the fire department, the county fairgrounds, and Crooksville High School.

Roseville Police Chief Derrick Keylor said the area had 50 to 60 calls for water rescues and about 100 people evacuated, and that Crooksville and parts of Roseville lost power after an AEP substation went underwater. Ohio's emergency operations plan sent at least 50 mutual-aid personnel.

A flood watch runs through Friday morning. More storms are forecast across central and southeastern Ohio through the week.

Columbus Council Hears Flock Camera Testimony

Columbus City Council heard public testimony Monday on the city's Flock license plate cameras but took no vote.

Police Chief Elaine Bryant said the readers figured in 49% of homicide arrests in the first half of 2026 and have helped find missing children and people with dementia. Critics pointed to a July police audit counting more than 15,000 searches possibly tied to immigration enforcement since 2023.

Kat Finneran of 614 ICE Watch called the system "unredeemable" and said policy changes can't fix it. Councilmember Emmanuel Remy said most past problems had been addressed, while Councilwoman Lourdes Barroso de Padilla said the system allows too much human error.

The city left Flock's nationwide data-sharing network in June and its statewide one in July. A volunteer-built map, DeFlock, plots the cameras, with clusters along High Street in the University District and near Easton Town Center and Polaris Fashion Place.

Beavercreek Makes the Beaver Official

Beavercreek City Council voted unanimously Monday to affirm the beaver as the city's official historic symbol.

Bucky the Beaver, the school district's mascot, turned up at City Hall for the vote, which came after Buc-ee's sued Beaver's Mini Mart for trademark infringement over its cartoon beaver logo. The Texas chain opened a travel center in nearby Huber Heights in April.

The resolution traces the name to Big Beaver Creek and Little Beaver Creek, which settlers named for the region's beaver population before the community's 1803 founding. It calls the beaver "not just a corporate marketing device" but part of the city's shared identity.

Mayor Don Adams said 50 businesses and organizations around town use a beaver in their logos, and the city says the resolution isn't tied to the lawsuit. Beaver's Mini Mart has vowed to fight the suit; Buc-ee's hasn't commented publicly.

Mike DeWine issued an emergency rule on Monday, putting addiction recovery housing directly under the management of the Ohio Department of Behavioral Health and requiring certification. “Many of these unregulated recovery houses reportedly have very poor, unsafe living conditions,” DeWine said. Power Outages, VHSL Realignment, and Football Freaks

Good morning! On this day in 1977, Richmond reached a high of 101 degrees, setting the record high temperature for that location since recordings began in 1898.

Speaking of extreme weather, a squall line tore through parts of the state and cut out power to nearly 115,000 utility customers. Learn more in Top Stories, then reply to let us know if you were one of them.

Squall Line Cuts Power Across Virginia

A fast-moving squall line knocked out power to nearly 115,000 utility customers across central and western Virginia on Monday afternoon.

The hardest hit ran along the Blue Ridge, from Albemarle County—where more than 16,000 customers lost power—through Lynchburg and into the Roanoke Valley. Roanoke’s airport clocked a 59.8 mph gust.

Appalachian Power reported more than 28,000 customers in the dark Monday evening and said it expected to restore most service by the end of Wednesday, and more than 29,328 Dominion Energy customers were without power in Central Virginia as of Monday evening.

Forecasters warned residents yesterday of another round of potentially severe storms as clusters pushed southeast out of the Ohio Valley.

VHSL Proposes Major Class Realignments

The Virginia High School League has released its proposed athletic realignment for the 2027-28 through 2030-31 cycle, based on grades 9-11 enrollment figures. Several schools face classification shifts, including Patrick Henry of Roanoke moving up from Class 5 to Class 6.

Roanoke City Public Schools has appealed the Patrick Henry move, citing excessive travel times of three to five hours that create hardship for athletes and higher costs. The same proposal was successfully appealed in 2022.

Four Prince William County schools—Battlefield, Unity Reed, Patriot and Hylton—will drop from Class 6 to Class 5 without appealing. Other changes include Amherst County and E.C. Glass falling to Class 3.

Appeals were due Aug. 10, with hearings set for Aug. 25 before final approval. The new alignment takes effect in 2027-28.

Hemp Firms Sue over New THC Cap

Seven Virginia hemp businesses have asked a federal judge to block a new state law limiting total THC in products to 2 mg per package, effective Aug. 15. The change eliminates a prior exception allowing higher THC if CBD levels were at least 25 times greater.

Companies warn the rule will render millions in inventory unsellable, force layoffs, and potentially bankrupt some firms that invested under the old rules. A hearing on their request for a temporary restraining order is set for today in Roanoke.

Officials defend the measure as closing a loophole that allowed intoxicating products with limited oversight, ahead of regulated adult-use cannabis sales in 2027.

Some medical users also fear disruption to treatments.
