| | | |  Supreme Court Reins in Nationwide Injunctions
The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 Friday that nationwide injunctions on President Trump's order restricting birthright citizenship could only be used under limited conditions, a victory for President Trump. Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote the majority opinion, avoiding ruling on the constitutionality of Trump's birthright order and focusing instead on limiting when a single district judge can block a presidential action nationwide. Barrett sparked attention in her majority opinion for directly criticizing the dissent from Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, saying, "We will not dwell on Justice Jackson's argument, which is at odds with more than two centuries' worth of precedent, not to mention the Constitution itself." Within hours, an advocacy group in favor of birthright citizenship urged a district judge to convert the case into a class action, one of the situations in which the Supreme Court said a nationwide injunction could be permitted. | Justices Also Rule on Schools, Porn, and More In a blockbuster day that ended the Supreme Court term, the Justices issued rulings on a half-dozen cases, including the birthright citizenship case covered above.
Most prominent among these was a 6-3 decision allowing parents to opt out of classroom discussions involving LGBTQ+ books, with the three liberal justices dissenting. The court said not allowing an opt-out would violate parents’ religious rights under the First Amendment. The justices also ruled, with the same 6-3 split, that Texas’ age-verification law for porn websites was constitutional, a decision that clears the way for other states to limit access to such sites for users under 18. Twenty states currently have similar laws.
In another case, the Supreme Court allowed HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to appoint and fire members of an ObamaCare task force. You can see a summary of all the rulings here. | Markets Rally Friday to Record Highs Markets rallied Friday as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at record highs and the Dow jumped 1%, rising to a level slightly higher than when President Trump took office. The S&P 500 rose 0.5% to a record 6,173, topping its Feb. 19 high, while the Nasdaq gained 0.52% to close at a record 20,273. A tentative ceasefire in the Israel-Iran conflict, as well as reports Friday that the EU is confident it can reach a tariff deal with the US before a July deadline, helped stocks recover from their lows in April, when Trump revealed sweeping tariffs.
