Legal Group Opens Probe into Fairfax 9/11 Guide

America First Legal filed a records request as part of an investigation into who developed and approved Fairfax County Public Schools’ controversial guidance for commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The six-page guide instructs teachers not to “center the extremists” or associate the attacks with Islam or Muslims. It also directs educators to identify al-Qaida as the terrorist group responsible while focusing commemorations on the victims, first responders, and others who helped.

Superintendent Michelle Reid said the division condemns the attacks, teaches them under Virginia’s history standards, and is reviewing the materials following community feedback. Former Attorney General Jason Miyares criticized the guidance as indoctrination.

$180M Newport News Expansion to Add 414 Jobs

S23 Holdings plans to invest $180 million to expand its River Port operation in Newport News, creating 414 jobs in ship repair, fabrication, and maritime manufacturing.

The project will add approximately 48,000 square feet of production space and a 27,600-ton shiplift capable of handling larger vessels. The lift is expected to begin operating in September 2028 and will support projects for the U.S. Navy and commercial customers.

Virginia approved $4 million in state grants for the expansion, along with workforce-training assistance. S23 previously announced a $64.4 million Newport News investment in 2020 that created 332 jobs.

Virginia Relaunches $4.8M Nursing Program

The Virginia Nursing Workforce Center relaunched a program offering $4.8 million to expand nursing education and help students earn wages while completing required clinical training.

The relaunch follows a state review that found approximately $10.6 million had gone unused across four nursing scholarship programs. Lawmakers transferred oversight of several workforce programs from the Virginia Department of Health to the Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority earlier this year.

A recent workforce analysis identified more than 17,000 job postings for registered nurses and nearly 4,000 for licensed practical nurses across Virginia. The shortage is particularly acute in rural areas.

Schools, hospitals, and other healthcare providers may apply for one of 12 two-year grants worth up to $400,000 each. Applications are due Sept. 30.
