Air Crash in Iraq Kills All 6 Crew Members

All six crew members aboard a U.S. KC-135 refueling aircraft that crashed in western Iraq on Thursday were confirmed dead on Friday. The Pentagon said the crash wasn't caused by hostile or friendly fire, though an investigation is ongoing.

Earlier, Central Command said two aircraft were involved. The second landed safely, Central Command added. "The loss of the aircraft was not due to hostile fire or friendly fire," military officials said.

This is the fourth reported aircraft loss since the Iran war started, after three F-15 fighters were shot down by friendly fire from Kuwait's air defenses. The KC-135 is normally used to refuel other aircraft in mid-air.

The Pentagon announced Friday that it was deploying the USS Tripoli and the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit from Japan to the Middle East, adding roughly 2,500 Marines and several warships to give Central Command more options for military operations.

Cuba Opens Negotiations with US

Cuba confirmed Friday that it has opened talks with the United States as a severe energy crisis continues to cause widespread blackouts, fuel shortages, and protests across the island.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel confirmed that former President Raúl Castro is helping lead the Cuban side of negotiations, while President Trump has suggested the island's regime could fall, referencing a possible "friendly takeover."

Senate Democrats on Thursday filed a war powers resolution to prevent the U.S. from going to war with Cuba without congressional approval. The resolution, introduced by Sens. Tim Kaine, Adam Schiff, and Ruben Gallego, could receive a vote by the end of the month.

Meanwhile, Díaz-Canel also announced on Friday that Cuba would release 51 people from prison, citing goodwill and close relations with the Vatican.

Every Kind of Weather About to Hit U.S.

The United States is facing an extraordinary convergence of weather extremes this weekend, with a heat dome, polar vortex, blizzard conditions, and an atmospheric river all hitting simultaneously across different regions.

A heat dome settling over the Southwest is expected to push Phoenix past 100 degrees as early as next week, temperatures never recorded that early in the city's 137-year weather history.

Meanwhile, the polar vortex will send Arctic air deep into the Midwest and East, while back-to-back storms could drop three to four feet of snow across the northern Great Lakes. The second storm may intensify into a rare land-based bomb cyclone.
