Article Icon 1Lawmakers Push for Fourth National Park

Arizona could soon gain a fourth national park under a proposal to add Chiricahua National Monument in Willcox to a list that currently features Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest, and Saguaro national parks.

A bipartisan bill led by Arizona's congressional members would elevate the century-old "Wonderland of Rocks," a move supporters say would bring increased funding, staffing, and long-term protection.

Willcox Mayor Greg Hancock backed the proposal before Congress last year, saying similar designations for other parks boosted visitation by about 20%. Some worry the designation could lead to overcrowding and development.

The measure must pass both chambers and be signed by the president, a process that could take months or years.

Article Icon 1Bill Would Let Pharmacists Test and Treat

A proposal at the state Capitol would allow pharmacists to test for common illnesses such as the flu and COVID-19 and prescribe treatment on the spot.

Currently, pharmacists in Arizona can conduct certain tests but cannot treat patients who test positive. The bill was scheduled for a committee hearing on Monday.

Supporters, including the Arizona Pharmacy Association, say the measure would expand rural access, where only 35% of primary care needs are met, while also speeding treatment and easing clinic strain.

Some medical groups and family physicians oppose the move, citing pharmacists' limited diagnostic training and warning of potential misdiagnosis or improper treatment.

An 8-year-old search and rescue dog with the Phoenix Fire Department is retiring after eight years responding to emergencies locally and nationwide.

Talon and his handler, Battalion Chief Mike Smith, deployed to building collapses, missing-person searches, and major disasters with FEMA's Arizona Task Force 1.

Smith credits Talon with helping locate survivors in complex rescue scenes, saying he trusts the dog's nose over any mechanical tool.

Talon will retire at Smith's home after years of navigating rubble that can strain joints.
