Good morning! On this day in 1887, former town marshal Timothy Isaiah “Longhair Jim” Courtright was killed in Fort Worth by his friend Luke Short in what became one of the most famous shootouts in the Wild West. The motive for the gunfight was never definitively determined, though Courtright and Short competed for control of gambling interests in the frontier town.

AG Paxton Probes Antifa-Linked Group

Attorney General Ken Paxton filed suit against the Houston-area Screwston Anti-Fascist Committee, alleging the nonprofit aided terrorist activity and engaged in doxing.

The legal action came as a result of the group posting personal information of alleged neo-Nazis and members of other far-right organizations online. The investigation seeks to find Screwston’s involvement in unlawful activity.

Alleged members of Screwston were also involved in an armed assault on an ICE facility in Alvarado. The group also sells merchandise promoting violence against ICE agents.

As part of the investigation, Paxton has issued request to examine the left-wing group, a legal demand that is used to explore the scope of legal violations.

MLB Spring Training Begins This Week

The 2026 MLB season officially begins this week as pitchers and catchers report to camps, marking the start of preparations for Opening Day across the league.

Houston Astros pitchers and catchers will begin workouts this Wednesday at their West Palm Beach training facility. The first full-team workout begins February 16. The workouts are free and open to fans. Fans can get their first glimpses of international signee Tatsuya Imai.

Texas Rangers pitchers and catchers report next Tuesday at their facility in Surprise, Arizona. The team will look to find a full-time closer and to fill the fifth spot in its rotation, with initial competition coming between Jacob Latz and Kumar Rocker.

Notably absent from Astros camp will be pitcher Framber Valdez, who recently signed with the Detroit Tigers.

Super Bowl Around Texas

Several Texas venues will host Super Bowl LX watch parties today as fans cheer the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, who meet at Levi’s Stadium in a Super Bowl XLIX rematch.

Catch the big game at Texas Live!, where fans can watch the game on a 100-foot screen and enjoy their favorite snack or beverage. Punchbowl Social is holding the Big Game Watch Party, which includes drink deals and a raffle. The Rooftop Cinema Club will allow fans to watch the game on a 24-foot screen overlooking downtown Fort Worth.

Several Texas natives will be on the field, including Seattle standout receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is also boosting its presence around the state and encourages fans to drive responsibly.
