| | Friday, February 20, 2026 | | | Good Morning! On this day in 1960, more than 200 Virginia Union students and faculty marched to Richmond's downtown shopping district to participate in sit-ins at the lunch counters of area department stores. A statewide referendum on whether to change the constitution to allow congressional redistricting ahead of this fall's elections is scheduled for April 21. The legal challenges to the vote are not resolved, however. The Republican National Committee filed a lawsuit this week in Tazewell County Circuit Court targeting election officials and the language of the ballot issue. "Virginia Democrats are trying to ram through an illegal redistricting scheme that a court has already called a blatant abuse of power," RNC Chairman Joe Gruters said. The Virginia Flyover will cover all the angles of this issue until the votes are in and the lawsuits are decided. Today's sponsor, GoldCo, is helping retirement savers explore how physical gold and silver could potentially strengthen and diversify their portfolios amid growing economic and political uncertainty. | Cannabis Market Takes Shape Both houses of Virginia's legislature passed bills this week to create a framework for the state's retail cannabis market. Differences will need to be ironed out before a bill can be sent to Gov. Abigail Spanberger, who said she will sign it. Each bill would limit retail locations to no more than 350 across the Commonwealth. The measures set different tax rates. The Senate bill proposes a 12.9% sales tax on cannabis and gives localities the option to add a 3% sales tax, while the House would set a 6% sales tax and also allow localities to add up to 3.5%. Under the House version, sales could begin on Nov. 1 of this year, while the Senate would set a start date of Jan. 1, 2027. Neither version would allow cities and counties to opt out of allowing cannabis stores. The Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association reported 172,778 adult emergency room visits related to cannabis use between 2020 and 2024, more than 31,000 such visits each year. | New Curfew Hours Set in Virginia Beach The Virginia Beach City Council moved its youth curfew an hour earlier, from 11 p.m. to 10 p.m. Unaccompanied minors will not be allowed in public spaces between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. The curfew rule includes several exceptions, including for minors going to or from work, concerts, or religious events. "VBPD will identify and focus on those young children, those 12, 13, 14, that are obviously underage," Chief Paul Neudigate said, noting they will be taken to youth centers instead of police headquarters. The new policy takes effect in March. | Officer Involved Shooting Washington County Sheriff's deputies shot and killed 52-year-old Christopher Allen Smith after he allegedly threatened them with a knife. The officers were serving an order at a home when an "altercation occurred between the subject and deputies," the Sheriff's Office said. The deputies rendered medical aid until emergency medical services arrived, but the suspect died at the scene. An autopsy was scheduled for yesterday in Roanoke. | |
| Flying together with our sponsor A New Era for Gold & Silver For years now, many people in or near retirement have viewed precious metals through a single lens: wealth preservation. It was the "safe haven" you turned to when the rest of the market looked shaky. But that era may have ended… with a new one emerging. We have now entered a period of unprecedented momentum. Gold charged past $5,000/oz. & Silver skyrocketed past $100/oz. For the first time in decades, the conversation for retirement savers seems to be shifting. It's no longer just about "holding the line"—it's about the potential growth these physical assets could bring to a diversified portfolio. Why This Could Just Be The Beginning While $5,000 gold and $100 silver are historic milestones, many seasoned market analysts suggest this move may just be getting started, even with the recent pullbacks. Analysts report that gold has more room to run as geopolitics and central banks buying fuel gains. With the upcoming U.S. mid-term elections, political uncertainty may increase further. At the same time, persistent concerns about over-valued equity markets could reinforce portfolio diversification flows into gold.
