Sam Houston authorized the expedition in retaliation for several Mexican incursions into Texas. Over 300 men who participated in the effort refused to go home and continued into Mexico with the ill-fated Mier expedition. A new hot chicken franchise is coming to Texas next year. Sterling High School was fatally stabbed by another student with a pair of scissors on Wednesday. The victim has been identified as Andrew Meismer, while the alleged perpetrator is Aundre Matthews, 18. The school was placed on a temporary hold as Meismer was transported to a hospital via Life Flight. Classes resumed after the suspect was apprehended, and students returned to school yesterday "with a full crisis response team in place." Families have criticized the administration for poor communication, continuing classes in the wake of the violence, and allowing Matthews to attend the school despite his alleged disciplinary history. A group of at least 25 students protested outside the school yesterday morning. One of them held a sign that read, "How many warnings is enough?" "It was really scary for a lot of us," said Serenity Wynn, a student who knew Meismer. | Texas Targets Abortion Pill in Federal Lawsuit Texas and Florida are challenging the widespread availability of mifepristone in a 120-page lawsuit that seeks to invalidate the FDA's approval of the abortion drug and guidelines that dramatically expanded access to it. Since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, a drug cocktail of mifepristone and misoprostol has become the most common method of terminating a pregnancy in the U.S. Abortion advocates insist there are few risks for women who take mifepristone, while opponents argue the drug's FDA label indicates 2.9% to 4.6% of women who take it could require emergency care. Since the drug's approval in 2000, the restriction limiting its use to seven weeks of gestation has been increased to 10, and it has been approved for distribution through the mail—a violation of the Comstock Act of 1873, according to the lawsuit. | High School Football State Title Games Kick Off This is the last week of Texas high school football, with 12 state title games being played at Arlington's AT&T Stadium. The matchups kicked off on Wednesday and are scheduled to wrap up tomorrow. On Wednesday, Gordon beat Rankin 69-22 for its third straight Class 1A Six-Man Division I title after their field was destroyed by a tornado in May. Jayton's Bode Ham scored 13 touchdowns—10 rushing and three passing—to propel the Jaybirds to a 99-54 win over Richland Springs for their second straight Class 1A Six-Man Division II title. Later, Hamilton defeated Joaquin 21-7 for their first-ever title. Yesterday's matchups featured Muenster's 28-0 win over Shiner for their second straight Class 2A Division II championship, along with Grandview vs. Yoakum, and undefeated Wall vs. Newton. Perennial powerhouse Carthage takes on West Orange-Stark today, and each of tomorrow's games pits a Metroplex team against one from the Houston area.
