Article Icon 1Patrick Proposes $1000 for Every Newborn

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick announced plans to create a state program that would give every Texas newborn $1,000 for stock market investment.

The proposed New Little Texan Savings Fund would cost about $400 million a year and would require a constitutional amendment to make it permanent.

The idea builds on a new federal program, signed into law under President Trump, that invests $1,000 for U.S.-born babies between 2025 and 2028, with funds accessible when the child turns 18.

Patrick says the program would teach financial literacy and build long-term wealth for young Texans.

Article Icon 1Power Grid Could Face Winter Strain

A new reliability report warns that the surge in new data centers statewide raises concerns about blackouts for Texas's power grid this winter.

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation cautions that nearly 100 registered data centers are now in operation, up from just 13 prior to 2021. The facilities consume large quantities of electricity around the clock, potentially shifting peak demand times.

ERCOT officials project just a 1% outage risk for January. Many Texans, though, remain skeptical, recalling that the power grid's failure during Winter Storm Uri in February 2021 left 4.5 million people without power for several days.

Article Icon 1Austin First Responders Get Bulletproof Vests

Austin firefighters and paramedics now carry bulletproof vests after nearly 300 were distributed citywide this week. The lightweight steel plate carriers protect against pistol and most rifle rounds, marking the first time every Austin firefighter has ballistic protection.

Austin Fire Department Captain Russ Howard said the vests help crews concentrate on emergency response instead of worrying about personal safety.

"We heard that whenever our fire department and EMS were going out with our police department, a lot of them were feeling like they were in danger or approaching dangerous situations," said Ashley Copeland with the nonprofit group that helped fund the vests.

It's a chilling thought: how easily can a stranger find where you live?

For most people, it takes less than 30 seconds. Data brokers are companies that legally scrape public records, social media, and other sources to build a profile on you. This profile—which includes your home address, phone number, and even your relatives' names —is then sold to anyone.

This makes it dangerously easy for stalkers, harassers, or anyone angry about your opinions to find you.

DeleteMe is a hands-free service that allows privacy experts to remove your personal information from hundreds of data broker sites. They handle all the removals and monitor the sites throughout the year. Removing your data helps you protect yourself from these real-world threats.
