The playoffs begin for the PLL today with a doubleheader in Boston on Labor Day for the quarterfinals with a slightly new playoff format. I didn't close the regular season great, as the Atlas let me down big time, ruining a nice parlay for me with a one goal loss to the Waterdogs in the last week of the regular season, going 1-4 to lose 2.78 units. Let's win to start the playoffs!
Cannons vs. Chaos (9/2 4:00)
Interesting matchup to start off the playoffs this afternoon as the winner of this matchup between the 3 seed Cannons and the 6 seed Chaos will go on to face the Atlas next week in the semis. These teams played a tight one a couple weeks ago, with the Cannons winning 11-10. The Cannons finished the regular season 7-3, and were good on both ends of the field. They scored an average of 12.6 goals per game, the fourth most in the league and allowed the second fewest goals in the league, an average of 11.5 goals per game. The Chaos are the only team with a better defense, the best in the league, allowing an average of just 11 goals per game. Their offense has struggled though, leading to their 4-6 season. They scored an average of just 10 goals per game, the fewest in the league. I feel like the Cannons are the better team and win this game at home, but I think the -200 price is way too expensive for a playoff game. I considered betting the -1.5, but could easily see this being a one goal game in either direction or Blaze Riorden stealing away the win here. I'd lean the under with this being the two best defenses in the league, but don't think it's worth betting on at 22.5, so I'll stay off this matchup entirely. Should be fun to watch.
Whipsnakes vs. Outlaws (9/2 6:30)
Solid matchup here for the later game of today's doubleheader between the 4 seed Whipsnakes and the 5 seed Outlaws. The winner of this one will face the Archers in the semifinals next week. The Whips started off the season slow, but picked it up and ended the year with a 6-4 record. Their offense was fantastic, scoring an average of 13.5 goals per game, the second most in the league. Their defense struggled though, as they allowed the second most goals in the league, an average of 12.4 goals per game. The Outlaws had a decent turnaround to their awful year as the Chrome last season, finishing the regular season 5-5. Statistically this team hasn't been great on either end of the field, scoring an average of just 11.7 goals per game, the third fewest in the league, and giving up an average of 12.1 goals per game. When these teams played in Week 10, Maryland won in a blowout, defeating Denver 16-9. I like the experience for the Whips to pay off here and get them the win and I'll take them for half a unit. I like the over too, which I'll take for half a unit as well.
