I loved the Golden Bachelor when it debuted last year and although Gerry and Theresa lasted shorter than the show aired, I thought the concept of it where these older people looked to find the love of their life. The maturity of all the women on Gerry's season was such a stark contrast to the usual casts of the regular Bachelor and Bachelorette, where yeah, they might want to find love, but are completely in it to become Instagram famous. It was such a breath of fresh air to watch and enjoyable to see them all completely in it for the right reasons, with the drama kept to a minimum rather than being the main focus of the show.
I was pumped when they announced they'd be doing The Golden Bachelorette and I thought Joan being the choice for the lead lady was a great pick to be the very first Golden Bachelorette. Joan's journey got cut short on The Golden Bachelor, after she had to leave the show early the day after an emotional one on one date with Gerry, so that she could be with her daughter who needed help after having a baby. I liked her on Golden Bachelor and think her getting a second chance at this whole thing, this time as the lead, is fantastic. Can't wait to see how this 61 year old mom and grandma's journey plays out.
I'm a day late watching since I had lacrosse last night while it aired, but let's get right into it!
We start with an emotional look back at Joan's 33 year marriage with her late husband, who passed away from cancer a few years back. She visits his grave and talks about how she felt invisible after his passing.
Onto premiere night at the Bachelor Mansion as the limos pull up. Drink's poured!
Let's the journey begin!
All of Joan's men seem like nice guys. No big novelty entrances besides a guy who rides in on a horse, a guy pulling up in a fully loaded station wagon, and then one last "very important limo".
Obviously everyone who's watched the trailers knows who this is last limo is. Kelsey, who won Joey's season of The Bachelor, introducing her father, Mark. Love that they included him. Mark won America's heart during Joey and Kelsey's hometown date and it's nice to see him again.
The guy that rolled into the mansion in the station wagon, Keith, who made a great start with Joan, and she says he made him feel safe, gets the first impression rose.
Following that, Joan goes back to all the men, has Jesse Palmer roll in a TV like its elementary school and gives the guys a surprise of their kids leaving them all encouraging messages about the journey that they're about to go on. So cute.
Onto the first rose ceremony of Golden Bachelorette history. Joan says that she's been looking forward to this moment but dreading it as well, simply because there aren't enough roses to go around. She wishes the men all the best and that if they go home tonight she wants them to all find love, and that they've all already won for putting themselves out there.
During the rose ceremony, Joan gets emotional and walks away as it gets later. She returns, tells the guys how appreciative she is that they're there and continues. With the final rose tonight…
"Jack, will you accept this rose"
I cannot wait for what's going to be a fantastic, emotional season.
